Our Privacy Commitment
WorkTrace is a privacy-first screen recording extension designed for students and educators. Unlike traditional proctoring software, WorkTrace operates entirely on your local device. We have built our extension specifically to protect your privacy while giving you the tools to prove the authenticity of your work.
Information We Do NOT Collect
WorkTrace does not collect, store, transmit, or have access to any of the following:
- Screen recordings: All video recordings are saved directly to your device and never uploaded to any server.
- Personal information: We do not require accounts, registration, or any personal details to use WorkTrace.
- Browsing history: We do not track what websites you visit or what you do online.
- Keystroke data: We do not log, monitor, or record your keystrokes.
- Biometric data: We do not use facial recognition, eye tracking, or any biometric analysis.
- Location data: We do not track or store your geographic location.
- Usage analytics: We do not use analytics tools to track how you use the extension.
- Session data: All session logs (assignment names, courses, timestamps, verification hashes) are stored locally on your device only.
How WorkTrace Works
WorkTrace operates entirely within your browser:
- When you record your screen, the video is captured and saved directly to your device's Downloads folder.
- Session information (assignment name, course, duration, etc.) is stored in your browser's local storage.
- Verification hashes are generated locally using SHA-256 encryption to provide tamper-evident proof.
- PDF reports and CSV exports are generated locally and saved to your device.
At no point does any of this data leave your device or get transmitted to our servers or any third-party services.
No Cloud Storage
WorkTrace does not use cloud storage. We do not have servers that store your recordings, session data, or any other information. Everything stays on your device under your control.
No Account Required
WorkTrace does not require you to create an account, provide an email address, or sign in. You can install and use the extension immediately without providing any personal information.
Third-Party Services
WorkTrace does not integrate with or send data to any third-party services, analytics platforms, advertising networks, or external APIs. The extension functions completely offline after installation.
Browser Permissions
WorkTrace requests the following browser permissions to function:
- Screen Capture: Required to record your screen when you choose to start a recording session.
- Storage: Required to save session logs locally in your browser.
- Downloads: Required to save video recordings and exported files to your device.
These permissions are used solely for the stated purposes and do not enable any form of tracking or data collection.
Data Retention
Since we do not collect any data, there is no data retention policy on our end. Your recordings and session data remain on your device until you choose to delete them. You have complete control over your data at all times.
Children's Privacy
WorkTrace does not collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13. Since no data is collected or transmitted, there are no special provisions needed for children's privacy beyond our general commitment to collecting no data whatsoever.
Changes to This Policy
If we make changes to this Privacy Policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Our core commitment to not collecting your data will not change.
